Spun out of Rewardrefer, Salary Star is a brand new app that connects business professionals and college students, to exchange wisdom and star quality potential. Here are the exclusives from my chat with the Founder, Tim Kou.
“Salary Star is where we break new ground”, Tim begins. Together with his three techies, Tim’s developing an app that helps students and business freshies to plan their careers from a salary point of view. Based on the student’s wishes and ambitions, they match with professionals from the right industries. The idea is to provide job leads.
“Salary Star is the new go to spot for finding your next job… The job that takes your professional life to the next level. The job that gets you the salary you deserve!”
Launched in the beginning of the summer, Salary Star already has a good 700 active users. The ambition is to push globally, but at this stage, they currently put focus on attracting users within the U.S. The tech team is based in Columbus, Ohio while operating marketers and people working with media are based in bigger cities like New York, San Francisco and Chicago.
One of the great features in Salary Star is its real-time audio communication. “There are a lot of professionals’ and employers’ profiles to check out”, Tim tells me. “Set a goal for your future salary, and check which companies are your dream companies”. Then, you just call them up. “Talk about your career goals and salary perspectives, and find out how to achieve this after graduating”, Tim suggests. “It’s kind of like career advising”.
“Press the phone button and talk with them!”
The team is making this possible by using app-to-app calling, and they integrated with Sinch after they’d started building Salary Star.
“Let me think… The biggest challenge we had to overcome was… Let me think…”
When I ask him if he’s encountered any big challenges during setup, he thinks long and hard before finally answering “I think there was no big challenge actually, it’s pretty simple”. Great!
He does however mention a time-counting feature that he’d like to see added. “Currently we offer free usage for 30 minutes, and after that, the caller has to pay… We couldn’t find any iOS API or demo for time-counting to keep track of the minutes, but we solved it on our own”.
He also mentions a bug in the push notifications system. I ask him if he’s reached out to our team for some one-on-one support, and he tells me he actually didn’t know he could. Let me hook you up with Christian!
“The overall iOS demo is pretty good, and the features and the way to use it – it’s well done!”
Tim’s giving me some really good feedback, so while we’re at it, I ask him to send an email with some pointers on how we can improve. He actually seems as interested in Sinch as we are in Salary Star, and he asks me some questions too. When I tell him that Sinch was founded last May, he goes “Oh, that’s quick. You move fast!”
As for the nearest future, Salary Star has set up two main goals. One is user growth, and the other is looking for financing. They’re going for 10K users, and I tell him I like the idea.
For me, Salary Star is something I could definitely have gone with when I was in college. It kind of brings the career thing to life a bit more.
For Tim, “Sinch is the next generation communication tools for developers”.
