Finding somewhere to live or looking for a roommate is never easy. Craigslist, Gumtree, and Blocket, mixed with real estate agents, and rental agreements is just stress summed up.
But Rich Luick has a better idea, something that mixes a social layer with a Tinder twist. His app Roomie is aimed at people looking for roommates, and adding a social layer so users can get a better matching experience.
Users open the app, create a profile to describes themselves, and then start swiping through others in the area they are looking to live in; viewing a profile card and clicking accept if they look like a match. When both users accept, the app matches them and starts an instant chat room.
I spoke with Rich, who is based in Philadelphia, to see how he is using Sinch in his app.
“I was originally building a project for a Bloc.io class under the mentorship of John O’Connor, and thought that Craigslist and Roommate searching could be more social and user friendly.” Rich build the app with logins and search features and then integrated Sinch for the instant messaging chat feature between paired users. After 4–5 weeks of building and tweaking, the app was ready to launch and test with the public.
Rich is using the Sinch SDK for the instant messaging part of his app, starting a chat session between two paired users. This allows for a rich app experience, away from cold listings and emails.
“Sinch is a great and easy to use with simple implementation with no trouble. Pretty awesome really!”
Using just the Sinch documentation and one email to Sinch support, Rich had a fully working app, and has even made a video to show how it works.
The app is currently only available for Android and is live on the Google app store. From there, Rich plans to start testing the app with users and get their feedback on the service and user experience, and iOS is on the roadmap.
