MessagePetz is a new app that makes it easy for the millions of parents who travel away on business trips each year to connect with their children via a calling and messaging app. In just over a year, they have built an audience of over 45,000 Facebook likes from 45 countries before even launching a demo app, just on the promise of what this app can offer.
“The MessagePetz app was not our first product,” Glenn Jones told me during our interview. “We actually started by developing a huggable teddy bear where parents could send love and hugs to their children when away from home. We decided to pivot about a year ago and started to develop MessagePetz as an iOS app, realizing we could more quickly reach a much larger global audience with an app over a physical product”.
After settling on creating a safe communication app for parents and children, MessagePetz started looking for a messaging SDK that would work well for both iPhones and iPad. “It needed to be something scalable and easy to set up with great support to help us grow faster”.
Glenn and his team researched the app communications market and found Sinch, and were impressed with how fast our team replied to their initial questions. Glenn said, “Some providers did not even reply back to our emails, so they were crossed off the list”.
The MessagePetz team built their app UI for iPhone and iPad, and then integrated Sinch, adding in-app messaging and voice at the same time. Using just the documentation and the support forums with our developers, they found their integration to be “relatively straightforward.”
Sinch is “an excellent and reliable partner to have, simple to use with great customer support”
“Although our initial target market is families with kids, we are quite impressed with how many young people between 13-18 years old started following us on Facebook, so we are excited to see how MessagePetz might grow and scale as a more general-purpose messaging solution in the coming months for anyone who wants to easily send affection to loved ones.”
Unlike some social messaging apps, safe and secure messaging and calling is an essential part of MessagePetz. This app has created a special child-friendly interface for iPads that let very young kids send love and hugs to their parents and family members through an adorable Teddy Bear. To protect kids, parents who wish to connect the iPad their kids use to MessagePetz must enter a 5 digit code sent to the device during initial set-up. This system confirms identity to prevent chats with strangers.
MessagePetz launched the first version of their app to the iTunes Store last week and will be making a big launch next week to drive signups and downloads.
The MessagePetz app is live on the App Store. They also plan to build an Android version of MessagePetz but first want to understand more about how kids, families, and people all over the world use and enjoy MessagePetz.
“We have some exciting ideas on what MessagePetz can mean to people around the world and are excited to engage with our customers to give them the best messaging experience possible. Sinch will be a big part of our success.”
