“A few months ago, I saw a Latino woman on the bus in Miami who had a problem but did not speak English and could not communicate with the driver. I thought, how could this be made easier so anyone could deal with these situations in a simple way?”
This is how Anh Le, CEO of Instrans, started our interview after I asked how he came up with the idea for his app.
Instrans is a new app that lets live bilingual speakers help translate users queries, using a community driven base of language speakers. Using their custom database, the app picks the most relevant interpreter for the user and connects the two with a phone call. The interpreter can then answer any translation questions needed by the user.
Based out of the USA and Vietnam, Anh Le and his 6-man team are still in the beta stage of their app and have just launched their app in the Google Play store.
Using Sinch for voice calling, users can call a bilingual speaker that can speak your language and that of the person you need to communicate with, and offer live translation help as you need it.
“We first build a skeleton project with the basic concept, and then added Sinch into it so we had a beta product to test with users.”
Surprisingly, Instrans did not need any help from the Sinch support team, and their CTO and Co-Founder Van Le, and Travis Cheung (Android developer) told me “we didn’t have any problems getting Sinch started at all. It all went smoothly”.
The app currently support Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese, and Instrans is planning to expanding support for other languages, as well as building an iOS app in the coming months.
“Our plan is to offer more ways to offer our translation service, using things like instant messaging and image sharing. In time, we would even like to offer video streaming for our users.”
“The best thing about Sinch is the SDK is easy to use and integrate into any app with little effort.”
So if you are traveling to a non-English speaking country this summer and you are worried about how to get by, download their Android app here.
