In Italian culture, food is central to people’s lives. The time spent on food and meals is very important, where people take the time to sit down and enjoy a meal and the company that comes with it.
And with smartphones, comes a new social app that helps connect users that want this experience. Using EatAround, users can host a meal time event at home and invite guests to attend. This can be friends, family, or new people.
I spoke with Filippo Beraldo, who is the lead developer at EatAround, working on the project and trying to refine the app. The team is currently based in Italy and spread around Treviso, Perugia, and Parma. “EatAround is something like AirBnB, letting users share their home and company with others” Filippo tells me.
After running some quick market research, EatAround found that there were one or two other major players on the market. EatAround wanted to put a much bigger focus on the food and social aspect of the meal time event, and have been building an MVP to test the market.
EatAround currently uses Sinch to power their instant messaging and soon verification features in the app. “We saw the need to let users chat with each other to extend the experience before and after the event, helping bring a bigger social aspect to the EatAround experience”, Filippo told me.
After using the Sinch tutorials and some help from support, Filippo and the team started working on the app last December part time, and are just about finished with the beta version. “We still have lots of user testing and market research to do, but we are excited about the challenge ahead”.
In the next few months, EatAround plans to develop an iOS version of the app, and focus on beta testing and user testing, before marketing their app and pushing it with major Italian food brands. Filippo tells me their plan is to get 10,000-15,000 users after launch and then expand across Italy.
“Sinch is the perfect tool to use in your mobile application to offer instant messaging and voice calls between users”
