Writing these case studies is great, and I get to talk with some of the brightest developers in the industry at the moment. Yesterday I got the chance to speak with Maha, a young French Android developer building a new travel communication app called BeGrouped.
As a project for her fourth year computer science course, Maha and her team of 5 based in Lyon built a real time communication app that travellers can use to plan and arrange their trips using real time, group instant messaging.
“I originally planned to use Android Sockets to handle messaging but this was not very effective. Then I found the Sinch SDK and this did everything for me”
BeGrouped built the app first and then added the Sinch SDK, starting with documentation and then working through tutorials. Maha built the whole BeGrouped app in 2 weeks with no support from the Sinch team. “I needed to make some code changes to open up group messaging, and make some tweaks to work with the Google Cloud service, but otherwise I was ok building this on my own.”
Once Maha picked Sinch, she followed the Android Instant Messaging tutorial, made some custom tweaks and then integrated it into her existing app. She also told me that her team liked the Sinch dashboard, as they can watch and manage the performance of the app and how many messages had been sent by the apps users. “This was really useful for us.”
The BeGrouped team and I are thinking about continuing to develop the app over the summer, and even add app to app calling and other additional features. Right now, Maha is doing an internship in France and hopes that her team can get together again over the summer and finish a beta version for the Google Play store.
“Overall, I would say that Sinch is a very good quality SDK, easy to use, and support has time to help people, which I really appreciate”
The app is not live yet, but stay tuned. Best of luck to BeGrouped – can’t wait to see your app in the Play Store!
