The releases keep on coming! Our new Verification SDK for Android makes verifying phone numbers easier than ever before! SMS verification no longer requires RECEIVE_SMS and READ_SMS permissions, there’s now an optional dependency on play-services-auth-api-phone from Google Play Services 11.0.0, which is also now a minimum requirement for automatic SMS code parsing, alongside Application Hash config param.
In order to comply with the new Google Play Store rules, which prevents access to reading SMS and the call log, we’ve released an updated verification SDK.
This new SDK supports automated reading of incoming SMS OTP codes and Flash Call on Android versions 9 and below. To carry on using verification , you will need to update your apps to use the latest Sinch SDK.
We do not yet have a solution in place for Android versions 9 and above to read the incoming CLI without the CALL_LOG permission. For these mobiles (currently less than 2%) we have put an instant reject rule in place which will enable seamless fall back to SMS. It is possible to get exemption from Google on these restrictions on a case by case basis, which will make Flash Call work on Android 9 – if you have any questions feel free to contact Sinch support at email@example.com.
So here’s what we recommend you do to stay in line with Google’s latest rules:
We are working on a solution for Flash Call on Android 9, but do not yet have an ETA on this as it may require additional features in the Android platform to automatically read the incoming CLI of a phone call.
We’ve detailed these instructions in the SDK documentation too.
The latest Sinch SDK can be found here.
As always, if you have any questions, just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
