Last weekend we sponsored the iOS devcamp 2014. 500 developers aged from 3 years and up spent the weekend networking, innovating and just having fun. It was a very family oriented and relaxed event. We loved it.
We did a workshop on how to build a app with voice capabilities with some sweet live coding and as a finale we called an impersonator to showcase the quality of the Sinch service.
There were a lot of winners and the pitches and price ceremony continued to around 7 PM in the evening. I was really impressed by the quality of the projects developed by the kids at the event, some of which could be something big. Here are my favorites:
Bullywatch is a wearable watch that is aimed at reducing bullying in school. When being bullied in school, the child will press a button which will turn the watch orange to expresses the emotions of the victim to the bully.
The reason why this project is my top choice is it addresses something that is a real problem in school and it encourages communication. Yash, if you are reading this, email us so we can add Instant messaging to the app with Sinch!
This app provides a platform that allows you to connect with your Facebook friends to buy gifts, deals and share expenses together. It integrates Venmo to make the payment experience with your friends easy, simple and social. This was built entirely at iOSDevCamp 2014 by Min Hu, Zeng Wang, Yue Bai, and Lan Hu.
In their presentation, the girls really sold the idea that instead of buying small unimportant gifts to each other for birthdays, users would use this app to pool money and buy your friend a gift they really want. Good work and a great idea!
See you at the next event.
